What to know before you publish
Allergens, dish by dish
In the UK, food businesses must give information on the 14 major allergens for every dish, and for food ordered online it must be available before the order and again at delivery. In the US there’s no federal rule for restaurant menus, but some states and cities require an allergen notice: check yours, and at the very least tell guests to ask staff.
Prices that match the bill
Online prices must be the ones you charge. Mandatory service charges or surcharges must be shown clearly: in the UK misleading prices breach consumer law, and in some US states, such as California, mandatory fees must be included in the menu price or displayed clearly on the menu.
Calorie labelling for larger chains
In the US, chains with 20 or more locations must show calories on menus, online ones included. In England, businesses with 250 or more employees must show calories on menus too. Independent restaurants are usually exempt.
